The problem is most LI carpet installers use a 5-lb pad and a knee kicker — cheap shortcuts that cause rippling and premature wear within 3 years. We upgrade to an 8-lb rebond pad standard and we power-stretch every install.

Upgraded 8-lb Rebond Pad
Big-box retailers install 5-lb pad by default. An 8-lb pad doubles the carpet's lifespan, improves underfoot feel, and significantly reduces noise transfer between floors.
Power Stretcher (not knee kicker)
A power stretcher pulls carpet from wall to wall under 400+ lbs of tension. A knee kicker only gets 70-100 lbs. The difference is why cheap carpet ripples in year 3.
Mohawk, Shaw, Stainmaster
We stock samples from all three major mills. Mohawk SmartStrand is our top recommendation for families — truly stain-proof, not just stain-resistant.
Stair Installation
Waterfall or French-cap installation. 14-17 steps is a typical LI split level. We pattern-match the stair carpet to the hall runner when installed together.
Our Process
How we do it.
- 1
Measure with 5% waste factor
Carpet runs in rolls (12 ft or 15 ft wide). We calculate cuts to minimize seams and waste. Most rooms need 5-10% extra for pattern matching.
- 2
Remove old carpet + pad + tack strips
Old carpet and padding leave with us. Tack strips are reused if sound, replaced if rusted. The subfloor gets swept and checked for nails/staples.
- 3
Install pad
Stapled to wood subfloor at perimeter + 12" field spacing. Taped at seams. Level and smooth.
- 4
Lay carpet + power stretch
Seamed with a heat iron. Power stretched from one wall to the other. Trimmed at baseboards with a wall trimmer.
- 5
Transitions & cleanup
Z-bar or metal transitions at doorways. Vacuum immediately. Carpet scraps removed.
