Dust-Containment Sanding · Water or Oil-Based Finish
Long Island Hardwood Refinishing
Got original 1950s oak under your carpet? We can bring it back. Walk on it the next day.

Overview
Why Long Island chooses us for refinishing.
Every 1950s Cape Cod and colonial on Long Island was built with red oak or white oak hardwood floors. Somewhere between 1975 and 2005 most homeowners covered them with wall-to-wall carpet. If that's your house, there's a 70% chance the hardwood underneath is worth saving. We refinish — strip, sand, stain, seal — for a fraction of what new hardwood costs.

What You Get
The specifics.
Dust-Containment Sanding
Bona Atomic or American Sanders drum machine with attached vacuum. 95% dust reduction vs old-school sanding. You can live in the house while we work.
Water-Based Polyurethane
Our default finish. Dries in 2-3 hours, 3 coats in a day. Low odor, clear amber tone, 10+ year durability. Bona Traffic HD is our go-to.
Oil-Based Polyurethane
For deeper amber color and traditional look. 8-12 hours between coats. Slightly more durable than water-based but longer project timeline and noticeable odor.
Custom Stain Matching
We match any stain color — Minwax Provincial, Jacobean, Special Walnut, or a custom blend. Staining adds a full day between sanding and topcoat.
Our Process
How we do it.
- 1
Inspection & moisture test
We lift a corner of carpet to verify the hardwood species (red oak vs white oak vs pine vs maple) and check for water damage, stain buckling, or loose boards.
- 2
Furniture out, carpet out, tack strips out
We remove everything — including the old carpet and pad. Tack strip holes get wood-filled before sanding.
- 3
3-pass sanding (40, 60, 120 grit)
Drum sander for the field, edger along walls, scraper for corners. Each pass reveals a cleaner surface.
- 4
Stain (optional) + 3 coats finish
If staining, apply and let dry 12-24 hours. Then 3 coats of water-based or oil-based poly with light screening between coats.
- 5
Trim, shoe, cleanup
New quarter-round shoe stained to match. Full vacuum and damp-wipe. Walk on it with socks the next day, normal use in 7 days, move furniture back in 14.
